Education and Experience: I have over 28 years in healthcare operations and my last 15+ years have been focused on compliance with Medicare regulations as it pertains to coding and billing compliance. My experience began during my C&L/PwC days where we helped clients around the country develop their compliance programs, conducted departmental risk assessments, and utilized our proprietary SMART software to identify cases that would be subject to OIG review (pneumonia, sepsis, etc.). Much of my software development experience has been focused on coding and billing compliance and I have created several thousand edits that help clients identify potential billing errors (SMART inpatient and outpatient coding compliance tools and UASI's QCCode and APCode products. I was also on the forefront of OPPS in 2000 and have written and presented on a variety of OPPS and Charge Description Master topics at both state and national meetings for both AHIMA and HFMA. I have conducted webinars for HcPRO on both OPPS and Charge Description Master. I currently serve as one of the Coding experts for Advance magazine and have previously served on AHIMA's Coding Council and the editorial advisory board for HcPRO's Briefing on APC’s and Briefings on Coding Compliance. In addition, I have performed dozens of CDM reviews over the past 14 years for single and multiple hospital systems and have worked with many facilities that are under corporate integrity agreements. I have also served a 10 month interim position as Charge Description Master Coordinator for one of my clients in upstate NY that is part of the Ascension Healthcare system.
In recent months I have been focused on RAC audits and have presented on the topic as recently as January at the TxHIMA winter meeting. I have performed or overseen detailed coding and billing audits for over 100 clients to ensure they are in compliance with all Medicare/Medicaid regulations. I have also trained many of my client facilities (and prepared my own audit staff) on UB92 and UB04 billing guidelines.
I have served in management positions since 1986 and each have led to more progressively responsible positions. In my last position as Executive VP at PHNS I had oversight of a staff of 120 FTE's and 90 hospital clients. Literally every position I have held has included some challenges related to business expansion or turnaround, and this is where I have truly excelled as a leader of change, growth and improvement. Whether through process redesign, complete reorganizational overhaul, introduction of automation or technology solutions, or implementation of best practices, my results have been consistent and repeated throughout my career.
